Subject and Object Questions

OBJECT QUESTIONS

These are the most common questions. Have a look at the structure:

Question Word + Auxiliary + Subject + Verb + Optional Object or Complement + ?
The Question Words are usually: what, where, when, who, why, which, how.

Example: What did you see last Saturday evening on TV?

SUBJECT QUESTIONS

These are not the most common but you can find them anywhere and at any time:

Question Word + Verb + Optional Object or Complement + ?
The Question Words can be WHO or WHAT, because they can be the subject of the question.
REMEMBER: Where, when, why (etc.) can't be the subject of any question.

Example: "Who won the Eurovision Contest 2008?" "Russia". As you can see, the answer of the question is the IDENTITY of the QUESTION WORD "Who". That's why we call these questions SUBJECT QUESTIONS.

Donnie Darko - The Film

Nowadays, we are watching the film Donnie Darko.
It was directed and written by Richard Kelly in 2001. However, the story takes place in 1988 in the town of Middlesex, Virginia, during the time of the United States presidential election. Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal) is an intelligent though emotionally troubled teenager who sleepwalks, and is in the medical care of a psychiatrist with whom he discusses his deepest thoughts. One night, a mysterious jet engine from a commercial aircraft falls into Donnie's bedroom; he avoids death by obeying a voice in his head causing him to sleepwalk outside from his room, corrupting space and time. The voice is that of Frank, an (arguably) imaginary friend dressed in a ghastly man-sized rabbit/skull costume. At midnight on October 2nd, Frank prophesizes to Donnie that the end of the world will occur in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds.

What will happen next? You better watch it!

Hey!! If you have finished, just have a look at these videos.

Did you like them? Do you get the difference between Present Perfect and Past Simple? As you can see, when they ask "What have you done today?" they use the Present Perfect because the day isn't over yet. However, they answer using the Past Simple because the action they did is finished.

Just to put an end to this topic, watch and listen to this song. It is called I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking for. As you can appreciate, it is about the Present Perfect tense!!
